Belinda Whitta
to trace a path through the dark
26 September – 5 October 2024
to trace a path through the dark is a performance conceived by Belinda Whitta, that opens and embodies a conversation with Earth.
Created using analogue photographic materials and processes to enable Earth the opportunity for self-representation. This is in the form of buried film, or earthly portraits. Using an analogue slide projector, these earthly portraits are projected alongside Belinda’s abstract and alternative haptic photography, as a conversation between the artist and this special body of land.
The artist’s complex relationship with this specific place is informed by their settler colonial ancestors' impact upon the land and environment. Sustainable analogue photography has been a way to heal this colonial gaze, and practice reciprocity. The photographic elements within this performance challenge the capability of traditional landscape photography to communicate the complexities of these intergenerational relationships, and prompt the question, who are we to photographically represent earth?
This performance is an immersive experience that will expand your sensory awareness of place, and deepen your appreciation of Earth.
